My Favorite TV Shows

I figured I would do some lighter fair.  I do not watch much TV. In fact, I only have one show that I currently watch, which is Lost.  As I think back, there are only a handful of TV shows that have made a big impression on me

1.
X-files (9 Seasons!!! Everytime this show was about to lose me, it won me back with some great stories.  It nearly lost me in season 8, but ½ way through that season, they figured out what to do with Dogget, used Scully in a powerful way, and added Reyes permanently, and brought Mulder back. WOW)
2.     Lost (Yes, I’m hooked.  It is the only television program I watch)
3.     Star Trek (the original series.  There is nothing like the original, though the writing and production values were definitely better the second time around. Just as an aside:  The Next Generation only grabbed my interest when Gene Roddenbury died.  Why? Before he died, Gene was adamant that people in the future would overcome the petty bigotries and conflicts with which we currently struggle, which I think is ridiculous.  As long as there are two people, we will struggle.  This lack of personal conflict also made for some boring shows.  Once he died, the producers began to write the characters a little more realistically)
4.     M*A*S*H  (I have fond memories of watching re-runs of this with my wife after the evening news.)
5.     Black Sheep Squadron  (An absolutely dreadful series that would probably be in a garbage heap were it not for the Corsairs.  As quirky as it was, I loved it.  This show single-handidly saved 7 or 8 Corsairs from destruction)

I have to say that I am in complete agreement with you on the late Gene Roddenbury. That's why I enjoyed DS9 so much. It was so much darker than previous Treks. And it was filled with all the conflict that different people can create just by being around one another.
You should've been watching Smallville, too.

        Mike,
DS9 was my favorite of the new shows, for the same reasons you stated. I'll have to take a look at Smallville. I watch very little TV, most is done by watching DVD's. I just started the new Battlestar Galactica, and planned on watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer after, but maybe I will do a detour on your recommendation.
        Thanks,
        PD

Gosh, I think that Gene Roddenberry's angle/belief has been giving me "hope" since the mid 60's - of living in a brighter future. That's why I've been a trekkie since then. Some of the STtO episodes really hammer at us about some issues - think about the one where a refugee was discriminated against because the half of his body that was black was on the opposite side of that of his oppressors; or the episodes where personalities were separated and the "good" couldn't live/function without the "bad" etc. Roddenberry didn't do away with petty bigotries in the episodes, he exploited them for some very moral stories. They just don't make TV the way they used to. (Watch Bonanza some time and really get your toes stepped on good 'n' proper.)
My personal Trek spinoff favorite is "Voyager" currently playing on Spike TV. It portrays Janeway as a strong Captain without giving away any femininity - an excellent role model for women. The life/sentience/growth issues are well depicted.
Having said all this, I read/watch Science Fiction so I can live forever - in futures that are rosier - I NEVER read Harlan Ellison or some other doomsayers - not for moralistic or political reason. I am fascinated by positive possibilities so I guess I AM wearing rose colored glasses.
BTW, Battlestar Galactica has been likened to the wandering Israelites but I can't remember by whom.
